Sausage and Mozzarella Calzones
1 lb. mild Italian Sausage or ground beef
1 onion, diced
3 garlic cloves, minced
1 (6 oz) can tomato paste
1 tomato paste can full of water
basil, oregano, and salt free seasoning to taste
2 C mozzarella cheese or more if desired
Nonstick cooking spray
Brown the meat with the onion and garlic. Drain off any
fat and grease. Add the tomato paste, water and seasonings, stir well. Let
simmer for about 5 minutes to combine the flavors. Make the dough following the recipe below. Place
some of the meat mixture on one side of the dough. Top with cheese. Fold the
dough over and seal the edge with a fork. Bake at 425 °F for about 25 minutes
or until crust is browned and filling is warmed through.
Dough:
2 pkgs dry yeast
2 C warm water
2 tsp. sugar
4 Tbsp. oil
5 C flour
Dissolve yeast in warm water. Stir in remaining
ingredients, combining well. Let the
dough
rest 5
minutes. Divide into 2 large balls for big family size calzones or a dozen or
more smaller balls for individual calzones. Roll out into circles. Transfer to
baking sheets that have been sprayed with nonstick cooking spray. Continue with
above recipe.
My family loves calzones. I short-cut the recipe and use pre-made pizza dough.
ReplyDeleteI would do that too but I live in a small town and they don't sell premade pizza dough in my grocery store. What I want to do is make a bunch of dough and throw it in the freezer. That way when I'm tired I can still make them.
